Trade & Transport Bulletin - Timely inquiry into international maritime piracy

A rise in piracy incidents at sea and the recent adoption of a UN resolution have led to a new detailed Australian government inquiry into the issue.

On 23 February 2009, Anthony Albanese, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, announced that an inquiry into international maritime piracy would be undertaken by the Inspector of Transport Security, Mick Palmer. With 99% of Australia’s exports carried by sea, piracy in the Gulf of Aden region off the coast of Somalia and closer to home is a significant concern.
