New Equal Opportunity laws proposed for Victoria

On Wednesday 10 March 2010, Attorney-General Rob Hulls delivered the second reading speech on the new Equal Opportunity Bill (the Bill) which will ultimately replace the Equal Opportunity Act 1995 (Vic). The Bill seeks to significantly alter Victorian discrimination legislation.

Significantly, the Bill imposes a positive obligation on employers (as well as others) to take reasonable and proportionate measures to eliminate discrimination, sexual harassment and victimisation.
