Charmian has specific expertise in environment and climate change law. She has significant experience in contaminated land management, pollution and waste licensing, biobanking, planning, heritage and environmental impact assessment.
Charmian advises clients from a range of industries, including the health, transport and renewable energy sectors, on the implications of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme as it evolves. She also assists her clients with their reporting obligations under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007.
Charmian conducts environmental due diligence for commercial transactions, including the acquisition of land to identify restrictions on land use. She also advises on duties of disclosure when acting for vendors of contaminated sites, and drafts agreements allocating responsibility for remediation.
Charmian has acted for international oil and gas companies, manufacturers, major health care providers, property developers, outdoor advertisers and statutory authorities.
Charmian is a former Crown prosecutor which enables her to assist clients facing prosecution by government environment agencies. With a background in both private and government legal practice, Charmian is able to offer clients practical advice on strategies to minimise the risk of legal action and damage to reputation that may arise from commercial decisions that affect the environment.
Charmian holds degrees in law and environmental science and a masters degree from Harvard Law School.
